We call them Ultraglicans for short – which still doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue! Sadly, none of these names from ISDIN in Spain are easy to pronounce or remember. But don’t let that hold you back from utilizing one of the most effective anti-aging products on the market today.
The Ultraglicans ampules are a unique blend of active Vitamin C (we”ll get to that in a moment), proteoglycans, preproteoglycans and hyaluronic acid. Technical, I know, but there is real science here! Basically the various forms of proteoglycans can strengthen the bonds between collagen fibers, giving your skin strength and radiance. They also stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid, which increases skin turgidity and decreases wrinkles.
Now, many creams and serums have vitamin C. But it’s important to note that Vitamin C is a very unstable molecule, which means that it breaks down quickly into inactive byproducts. Most creams and serums contain vitamin C that is not active. This product, however, contains only active Vitamin C, which is why it is stored in these colored glass ampules. They are not just for show! If Vitamin C is exposed to light or air it will become inactive after a few days, which is why the ampules are an amber color and why, after opening, the product must be used after 72 hours. Great technology here, and all for a practical reason.
So much for the science. What can you expect to see when using the product? Of people using the product twice daily, after just six weeks, 95% reported brighter skin and 78% reported fewer wrinkles. Plus it feels and smells good. We love this product, and we think you will too!
Those cute little freckles across your nose? They might look nice now; however, as you get older they meld together to form the dreaded “age spots”. In fact, “freckles” and “age spots” are the exact same thing – medically they are called lentigines, and they have nothing to do with age (Check out your buttocks – unless you are a nude sunbather, I would bet they are pretty clear!). No, lentigines, like sunburn and cancerous lesions, are caused by the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
There are two major types of ultraviolet radiation – UV-A, and UV-B rays. Scientifically, they correspond to different areas of the spectrum of light. For our purposes, the major difference is that UV-B primarily causes skin cancers and precancers, while UV-A is instrumental in causing pigmentary problems (lentigines, melasma, blood vessels, etc).
So the bottom line is that we instruct our patients to get and use a broad-spectrum, UV-A AND UV-B blocking sunscreen. Several of the chemical blocking sunscreens are effective (such as oxybenzone) but many prefer the more natural physical blocking agents such as zinc or titanium dioxide. These are both excellent blockers of both types of rays, and they are often micronized which makes them less visible. Important points about sunscreen are to apply a liberal amount to all exposed areas, and to reapply about every two hours, or after swimming or sweating profusely. Also, remember that clouds are NOT a significant barrier against UV rays – many people get burned on cloudy days!
So enjoy your outdoor activities this summer – but remember to always use your sunscreen before going outside!
Tattoos are said to be very addictive, and therefore many people get tattoos without proper thought first. As dermatologists, one of our primary concerns is that tattoos alter the appearance of the skin, making it more difficult to detect skin cancer, particularly melanoma, sooner rather than later. This has profound implications for survival, as melanomas which are caught early are very curable, whereas those which are detected later have a very poor prognosis. Then, of course, there is the issue of having a drawing on your body for the rest of your life. Perhaps the design doesn’t really suit your personality anymore. Maybe you got someone’s name who is no longer part of your life and you want to move on. A new job could be the issue. Many workplaces and even the U.S. Military will not allow tattoos in any visible areas of your body. Sometimes people are changing religions and removal is part of showing your dedication. Nearly everyone knows someone in one of these situations or you may be in one yourself.
Today, lasers are the most common and successful method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments, which are then cleared away your own immune system. However, this isn’t all done with just one treatment. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate to destroy the ink. Technology has advanced to the point where scarring is minimal, sometimes non-existent, but this can vary depending on the situation.
On top of being somewhat physically painful, laser removal can be painful to your wallet as well. Depending on your tattoo, you may need anywhere from 4 sessions to as high as 12 and beyond depending on the tattoo, the laser used and your skin. We are here to help you with the removal of tattoos you no longer wish to have. However, as your dermatologists, we would prefer that you do not get tattoos that are not well-planned or that cover moles. If you have a personal or family history of melanoma, we highly recommend that you do not get tattoos at all. Remember….THINK before you INK.

We are very excited to announce our new product lines – ISDIN, a cosmeceutical line from Spain, and the return of the Glytone line produced in France. But why? Didn’t we say that NeoCutis and SkinMedica were so awesome? Did they all of a sudden become bad?
No, of course not. They are still excellent products. However, while we realized when we brought them on about 5-6 years ago that they were expensive, at that time the prices still seemed reasonable. With each passing year, however, the prices increased to the point of us realizing if WE would be unprepared to spend $230 for a product, how could we expect all of you to do so?
So, we began the search. As we have done in the past in such times, we evaluated all the major brands available for dispensing from physician offices. We tested them for efficacy, feel, smell, and of course, value. We had thought that we might wind up coming back around to the Glytone line, which many of you have enjoyed in the past. And indeed, that was our conclusion, and we are happy to reintroduce it.
Our completely new line, with all of it’s unpronounceable names, is a fascinating brand that has taken Europe by storm. Interestingly, and excitingly, it is formulated to not only treat the cosmetic aspects of sun damage (brown spots, wrinkles), but also to treat the small precancers called AKs that so many patients have! The workhorse product of this line is called Eryfotona, and is considered both a sunscreen as well as utilizing Nobel Prize-winning technology to repair skin cells. We look forward to introducing all of our patients to these wonderful, much more affordable, products!
Some of the most common complaints we hear in the office are, “I want to look a little bit more youthful” and “Is there any way I can get rid of these sun spots?”. If these are some things you find yourself thinking, our Intense Pulsed Light laser may be a perfect choice for you.
IPL is a light treatment we use that targets redness, brown spots, broken blood vessels and “age spots” in areas like face, chest, neck and arms. IPL stimulates collagen production so it can also have a mild skin tightening effect. In just 2-4 short treatments, your skin can look brighter, younger and smoother! Many skin rejuvenation treatments take months to see results, but with IPL, results are seen within 10 days, and downtime is minimal.
IPL offers a long-lasting effect for signs of sun damage and discoloration. This laser is used primarily for aesthetic purposes but also improves a variety of skin conditions like the redness associated with Rosacea and Melasma.
If you think your skin may benefit from this impressive laser, contact our office today for a complimentary aesthetic consultation!
Whatever type of lip you desire, we now have the tools to make it happen! With Juvederm or our newest filler, Volbella, we can shape the lips in a variety of beauty-enhancing ways.
Volbella is a new filler designed specifically for the lips. Unlike some of the first generation fillers, Volbella is extremely smooth and easily moulded, a characteristic highly desired when injecting the lips. The results are natural-appearing, and even the fine lines around the lips are easily melted away with Volbella. Additionally, it enhances the lip line, making lipstick application easy and gorgeous. Should much fuller lips be needed or desired, we would use Juvederm for it’s fuller plumping effects, but if just a small augmentation is desired, Volbella is the way to go. Sometimes we even use both – for volumizing and sharply defining the lips.
Many patients say to us, “I feel like I just aged overnight.” Well, you did not, but it can sure feel that way. The sad truth is that your skin ages every day, but most of the time you don’t realize it until there has been enough of a cumulative effect for you to one day take notice. Recent research from the University of California sought to quantify how fast average skin aging occurs. Collagen and elastin breaks down at a rate of 1% every year after the age of 18, but at 40 that rate doubles to 2% annually. By the time 60 rolls around, the average person will have lost almost half their skin thickness. One may start to notice new wrinkles, deeper wrinkles, dullness to the skin’s appearance, heavy looking eyes and skin discoloration. Once patients start to see these signs, they begin asking what they can do. But guess what? We can certainly treat the damage; however, it is already too late to start preventing…
You don’t want to wait until you visibly see the signs of aging to start preventing them. The earlier people understand that preventing the loss of collagen and elastin is paramount, the better off they will be. So, is there anything you can do? YES! Ask us about the right skin care. So many people waste a ton of money on the wrong skin care routines or they have no skin care routine. The right products may seem a bit more expensive than your over-the-counter brands, but so many don’t realize that:
there is a reason for that (they are proven to work through rigorous research and development) and
they actually last a long time.
Don’t wash your face with just anything. Use a face wash with glycolic acid to stimulate cell turnover. Use a daily sunscreen. Hydrate the delicate skin around your eyes. Apply a moisturizer with antioxidants, hyaluronic acid or retinol that all help to repair damage to the skin’s DNA from age, sun damage, pollution, etc.
There is no time like the present to come into the office and start talking skin care.
Hair loss in women is a devastating problem that we see frequently at the Harkaway Center for Skin Refinement. Hair loss can be sudden in onset or chronic, and both types of hair loss can be difficult to treat. Oftentimes there is an underlying medical problem that can be diagnosed by exam and labwork and then treated, but it seems that more often than not there is no obvious medical cause for hair loss.
Until recently the providers at our office have felt somewhat hopeless when trying to help woman regrow hair. There are a few medications that exist to treat female hair loss but these medications are often not well tolerated, have unpleasant side effects, and do not give women the results that they are looking for.
About 6 months ago we learned of a new line of scientifically developed medical products that truly do help women regrow hair!! We were skeptical at first as female hair loss has been so difficult to treat in the past, but the studies on these products were so impressive that we decided to offer them to appropriate patients. Amazingly enough the hair loss line has worked beautifully for most of our patients, evidenced by the fact that women keep coming back absolutely thrilled to buy more!! We are even having success in women who have tried every other medical treatment, including rogaine, and have failed those treatments.
So how do these hair loss products work???
For sudden hair loss after a stressful life event the products work by increasing blood supply and nutritional factors to the scalp, speeding up the regrowth of hair and strengthening the existing hair.
For chronic hair loss and thinning hair, the products work by many mechanisms; they improve circulation and nutrition to the scalp and also improve the hormonal environment of the scalp and hair follicles which speeds up hair growth, slows hair loss, and increases the strength of fragile hair. The products seem to wake up aged cells that nourish the hair follicle, truly amazing.
The product line consists of a special shampoo which prepares the scalp to receive the hair loss treatment and strengthens the existing hair, a non-sticky spray which lengthens the growth phase of the hairs and favors hair growth, and an oral vitamin complex which provides essential nutrients and antioxidants to re-energize and revitalize hair (and nails too!).
Apparently 1/3 of all women between the ages of 35 and 45 experience hair loss; that is just a staggering number, and as women get older the number who experience hair loss increases. If you are experiencing hair loss or thinning please make a medical appointment so that we may discover the reasons for your hair loss and help you to regrow hair. There is no need to just accept hair loss as your fate, we are here to help and finally have this new wonderful line of products to improve your chances of success.
There I was, doing what so many of us do when looking in the mirror. Pulling back on my jawline – seeing how much better it looks when pulled just a bit tighter. Unlike the rest of you, however, I then yelled down the hallway; “Jen! Come in here and do my threadlift” Ten minutes later, having had the quick procedure, I was seeing my afternoon patients!
There are two new types of lifts recently exploding in the aesthetic market. The easier one is, as you might expect, for only mildly loose skin; this is the one I had done and it is called NovaLift. Using thin little cannulas, the thread is inserted into the area to be tightened, and as the cannula is being pulled out, the little barbs on the thread pull the skin in the desired direction. Our other new lift is called the Silhouette Instalift – it uses slightly thicker threads which have little cones on them to catch and lift the skin.
We are extremely excited about these new procedures – give us a call to schedule a complimentary consultation and learn more!
